Who Is LULAC
It is the League of United Latin American Citizens, the largest and oldest Latino organization in the United States of America.
What Do They Do?
LULAC promotes education, citizenship, cultural awareness, economic development, housing, voter rights/voter education, discrimination issues. For youth, they provide scholarships, mentoring and internship opportunities.
Who Can Join LULAC Youth?
Any youth/student attending school between the ages of 12-18 years.
What Happens After LULAC Youth?
They are eligible to participate in the Young Adult Division ages 19-30 or you may become a member of the adult council.
How Do You Join LULAC and What Are The Dues?
You can download an application here or you can contact any adult or youth members of LULAC for an application. Applications are received and voted upon by the youth membership during their regular meetings. Annual dues are $7.00.
When Are The Meetings Held?
The youth meet every other Wednesday at 5:30 pm in room 194 at San Benito High School, at times they meet in other locations like the YMCA facility. Meetings are chaperoned at all times.
What Activities Are LULAC Youth Involved In?
As a youth member you will have many opportunities to travel to youth leadership conferences within the state and out of state. Youth attend local, district, and state meetings. Their agenda is based on issues that are important to them. They sponsor bake sales, car washes, and numerous other fundraisers to raise money for their trips. They are involved in community service work such as Downtown Cleanup, Street Festival, Christmas toys for needy children, Christmas caroling at the convalescent hospitals. They participate in student conferences such the Latino Student Leadership Conference, attend the Annual Youth Leadership Retreat at La Paz, where Cesar Chavez lived and is today buried. Youth participate as tutors for Young Readers Program at Ladd Lane School.
How Can I Benefit by Being a LULAC Youth Member?
Scholarships are made available to LULAC Youth members graduating from high school. Youth can apply to other LULAC scholarships at the state and national LULAC levels. Youth can participate in the Youth Leadership Conference in Washington DC every October. LULAC youth learn how to conduct and participate in meetings. They get to meet many individuals at national and state conferences and meetings who have made an impact on their lives and formed their futures.
